Pretoria, July 15, 2024 – The University of South Africa (Unisa) has issued an urgent warning to all students regarding the security of their myLife and myUnisa accounts. As part of a scheduled upgrade aimed at enhancing security, students will experience a brief service interruption and will be required to create new passwords for their accounts.

Unisa, South Africa’s largest university known for its Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) approach, operates primarily online, allowing students to study remotely and conduct examinations online. While this approach offers numerous benefits, it also comes with inherent risks, particularly related to cybersecurity.

Following the upcoming upgrade, which is set to take place in the next few days, students will need to create new passwords whenever they use the “Forgotten Unisa Password” function. This measure is part of Unisa’s efforts to bolster security and protect student data from unauthorized access.

“We are urging all students to update their myUnisa/myLife passwords regularly,” a Unisa representative stated. “This can be done through the Microsoft Online Password Reset link, which is integrated into our multi-factor authentication system.”

To ensure stronger account security, Unisa has provided a comprehensive guide on creating robust passwords. The new passwords must be at least 12 characters long and include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. For students needing assistance, tips and examples are available on the Unisa website.

“This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access to myUnisa/myLife, even if your password has been compromised,” the representative added.

Students are encouraged to contact the Unisa toll-free number at 0800 00 1870 for further information or assistance with the password reset process.

As Unisa continues to enhance its online security measures, students are reminded to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting their personal information.
